While there is no shortage of dangerous situations you can get caught in while driving on America’s highways, a dense fog like this one has the potential to do some serious damage. Watch as this driver’s dashcam captures the carnage after the highway is engulfed in a thick fog, essentially blinding all the drivers that are coming down the roadway. The result was a pile-up and some pretty high-speed collisions.
It’s pretty unreal how quickly things can happen. At the start of the video, you’ll notice the clear air, however, just a few feet ahead, that changes drastically. As soon as this car enters into the fog, visibility is cut down by a good 80 percent. It’s hard to win in this situation, because while you would like to slow down and be cautious, the cars behind you will not be able to immediately react to the slowing speed. This car quickly comes up on a pile of stopped cars and slams on the brakes, and while the driver did manage to avoid a wreck, the other commuters did not.
Multiple heavy collisions occur, and you see cars scrambling in an attempt to get out of the way. The worst part is that there isn’t a whole lot you can do to avoid it once stuck in the pile-up, other than pray that the drivers coming from behind are slowing their speeds. Although there are not too many details on this particular incident, it doesn’t appear that any fatalities or serious injuries occurred during the wreckage.
Take notes from this situation, and if you ever get caught in a thick fog such as this, slow your speed down gradually, but be aware of the vehicles that are around you. Avoid using your high beams and put on your flashers. If you can’t see far ahead of you like this person, find a good place to pull off of the road to wait out the weather, because it’s never a safe situation to continue on if you can’t see what’s ahead of you.
