Most Americans love getting behind the wheel and taking a cruise, but is the road you're driving down really safe?
Back in 2017, GeoTab, a company that specializes in GPS fleet management and vehicle tracking, shared a map that shows each individual state's most dangerous highway. To create the rankings, Geotab analyzed the annual number of road fatalities and fatal crashes from 2008-2017, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. They also looked at the average daily traffic counts provided by the Federal Highway Administration to create a "fatal crash rate."
Florida's US-1 earned the highest overall fatal crash rate with over 1,000 accidents with casualties being reported in just one year. You can see each state's most dangerous highway highlighted in red below.
Texas' US-83, also known as the Texas Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway, had the second highest overall fatal crash rate. That stretch of road has had an average of 26 fatal crashes a year over the past decade.
Another high-ranking highway is Tennessee's I-40 corridor, which runs through the state's three largest cities. That road has the second-highest amount of crashes and fatalities in the country.
