Can a Pothole Really Cause Your Airbags to Deploy?

The crew at Warped Perception work very hard at one thing and one thing only: Destroying everything they touch in spectacular fashion.

In an episode from back in early 2018, host Matt Mikka was on a mission from hell to destroy his "see-through" 2003 Mercedes-Benz E320. He takes the once respectable mid-size luxury sedan to a street in Chicago that is absolutely ridden with potholes. He then lines her up against some mean craters that the city has yet to repair.

On his first couple runs, he discovers that going too fast causes the car to fly right over the pothole. He adjusts his speed down to about 40 MPH, and on the next run, the passenger side airbags deploy. He hits what he calls a "primer" and a "rim killer" pothole, and it seems the air bag went off as the left upper ball joint rebounded up towards the body of the car.

It's a little odd that the passenger side curtain airbag went off and not the driver's, but after looking at the car, you wonder how anything functions properly anymore.

Some would stop here, but not Matt. He really wants to see some carnage, so he goes at it again. This time he blows out another tire and calls it a day. Teasing the next episode, he promises even more carnage. Thankfully, since this happened a couple years ago, we don't have to wait until next week until the sequel.

Now, as it turns out, there have been several videos of Matt going over potholes and speed bumps at high speeds. One video, for example, shows him hitting speed bumps in slow motion at 80 MPH. Check it out!
