After a slew of YouTube comments and requests begging for this match-up, the folks over at Hennessey Performance finally pitted two of the best American muscle cars on the market against each other in a proper shootout.

To make the playing field somewhat even, the Dodge Hellcat Challenger and the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 got a rolling start in a best-out-of-three street race. Both cars are pretty evenly matched at their stock specs, so it's anybody's game when they come around the corner and really open the throttle.

Put your money down and watch until the end to see the winner. You watch it yet? Well, hopefully you had your money on the Hellcat.

As many commenters pointed out, the end result may have been different if both cars were either manual or automatic. It looks like an auto Hellcat versus a manual Z1 is pretty much a done deal.

Per Road and Track:

Both cars are factory stock, and the results are close. The Hellcat manages to edge out the Camaro, but that's almost entirely thanks to its automatic gearbox--the ZL1 wasn't equipped with Chevy's new 10-speed auto, but with the standard six-speed stick.

Arguably, the ZL1 is the more impressive car here. If the Camaro had an automatic gearbox, it would be easy to imagine a dead heat between the two. And if you were to take this battle onto a road course, the Hellcat driver probably wouldn't see where the ZL1 went.

So, maybe it wasn't exactly a fair fight, but either way, this high-octane racing experience made for an awesome watch.
