Shane van Gisbergen matches Jeff Gordon's historic mark

Shane van Gisbergen dominated at Sonoma Raceway on Sunday to score his third win of the Cup Series season. In the process, he matched a historic mark from Jeff Gordon.

Sunday's race marked the third consecutive road course event in which van Gisbergen started from the pole and won the race. He achieved this in Mexico City, on the streets of Chicago, and at Sonoma Raceway. Gordon was the last driver to achieve this feat, doing so in 1998-99.

The four-time Cup Series champion kicked off his streak at Sonoma Raceway in 1998. He won the pole and led 48 laps before winning. Gordon then won the pole at Watkins Glen, led 55 laps, and won.

His third win was at Sonoma Raceway in 1999. He started from the pole, led 80 laps, and then won the race. Gordon also won the 1999 race at Watkins Glen. He just started third before leading 55 laps.

Van Gisbergen matched Gordon with his third consecutive win while also breaking the Hall of Famer's mark for laps led in a single race at the track. He started from the pole and led 97 of the 110 laps. The only times he did not lead were when he headed down pit road at the end of stages 1 and 2.

Gordon set this laps led historic mark in 2004 when he led 92 laps at the California road course.

"It means everything," van Gisbergen said about his success since moving to NASCAR. "That's why I race cars. I had an amazing time in Australia, and then to come here and the last couple weeks or years actually has been a dream come true.

"I've really enjoyed my time in NASCAR. Thanks, everyone, for making me feel so welcome. I hope I'm here for a long time to come."

With the win, van Gisbergen is now in a tie with three other drivers for the most wins this Cup Series season. He joins Christopher Bell, Denny Hamlin, and Kyle Larson with three wins. No other driver in the series has more than one win.

While the next tracks on the Cup schedule are ovals, van Gisbergen will have an opportunity to score another win before the end of the regular season. He and his fellow competitors will head to Watkins Glen International in August, he finished second behind Chris Buescher last season.

If van Gisbergen starts from the pole and wins at Watkins Glen, he will break his tie with Gordon and set a new historic mark in NASCAR.
