Connor Zilisch, Shane van Gisbergen deliver at Sonoma Raceway

Shane van Gisbergen crossed the finish line in second place at Sonoma Raceway, but that did little to diminish his excitement after a late battle with Connor Zilisch.

After all, the two drivers were able to deliver a truly memorable finish.

"What an awesome race," van Gisbergen said after Saturday's Xfinity Series race. "I hope everyone enjoyed that. I gave him a bump into (Turn) 7, wheel hopped and probably could have taken it, but I just waited.

"I didn't want to do it like that and then we raced down the hill. What an awesome race!"

The two Trackhouse Racing/JR Motorsports drivers were in a class of their own on Saturday afternoon. They combined to lead 70 of the 79 laps, only giving it up to other drivers on strategy. They spent the overwhelming majority of the race in the top two after starting on the front row together.

The battle was respectful, and they went out of their way to avoid contact. Although these rules loosened in the closing laps. Zilisch was close on fuel, so van Gisbergen put on the pressure. The New Zealand native also used the bumper a few times, but he avoided egregious contact.

"I mean, it's always the hardest trying to save fuel while someone's breathing down your neck, but yeah, I mean, there was a chance he could have got by me when he hit me and he let me have it and raced me clean," Zilisch said after doing his celebratory burnout.

"So I respect the hell out of him for that and I'm looking forward to racing against him more."

This was a different post-race interview than the one that Zilisch took part in last weekend in Chicago. He walked away from a big battle in which he finished second saying that van Gisbergen's aggressiveness had surprised him.

Zilisch added that he would take notes on his fellow driver and do things differently the next time he raced him. One week later, he secured the win after holding off a driver with significantly more experience.

This wasn't just any other driver, however. This will likely be Zilisch's teammate as he is expected to move up to the Cup Series with Trackhouse Racing.

"You gotta race hard to try to get the win," JR Motorsports owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. told CW Sports. "SVG wanted to win the race, but he's gotta take care of Connor at the same time.

"This is exactly what we saw last week, and we saw a little bit of a different outcome. But we know that they are more than likely going to be teammates racing into the future and beyond, and SVG (came) over to victory lane, and they had a fun little back and forth about the day's result.

"I think this is kind of a look into the future of what we're all going to be able to enjoy."
