Hamlin: Richard Childress 'hung a left' and doored JGR car

As Denny Hamlin tells it, Joe Gibbs Racing and Richard Childress Racing had an unexpected run-in Sunday after the Cup Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

The result - Richard Childress hung a left and damaged a car.

Hamlin told the tale on this week's episode of his "Actions Detrimental" podcast. He explained how the Joe Gibbs Racing crew was part of a five-car police escort heading to the airport. Childress apparently wanted to become part of this envoy, so he did so in an aggressive fashion.

"(Childress) was not part of this escort, Richard Childress was part of the vehicles that needed to move out," Hamlin said on his podcast. "The police got him to move out of the way. Well, somebody within Joe Gibbs Racing didn't leave a gap.

"And Richard says, 'Well, I'm joining this escort, whether you guys like it or not,'" Hamlin continued. "He forced his way in. Well, this employee says, 'No, you can't just join in,' and so he pulled up beside him.

"What did Richard Childress do? He hung a left. Destroyed the side of the car. He did. He turned left."

According to Hamlin, this was not simply a story he heard. He was directly behind the incident after photographer/social media man Jared Allen "lost the draft" of the police escort.

Being this far back in traffic put Hamlin in danger of getting mired in race-day traffic, but it also provided him with a front-row seat for this wild incident featuring a fellow NASCAR team owner.

"I witnessed it," Hamlin said. "We were right behind it. I'm like, 'Oh my God, did he just...he did. And I was like, 'Jared, pull up to the car.'

The right side of the JGR car was destroyed, and Richard, he just stayed in the gas. He hung the left on them and just doored the s-- out of our car. I couldn't believe it. He wanted in, and he wasn't going to take no for an answer."
