Nothing gets a gearhead’s motor running quite like seeing massive machines in action. Especially the kind you don’t typically see cruising down the highway during your daily commute. The Liebherr T 284, manufactured by the Liebherr Group out of Switzerland, is one of these types of machines.
The Liebherr T 284 is in the industrial business. A massive mining truck that will blow you away with its sheer size and power. Here’s a brief look at this behemoth throwing its weight around. Just look at the size of those tires!
While the title in the above video claims that the Liebherr T 284 is “The Largest Dump Truck in the World,” it’s close, but not quite deserving of the title. According to Mining Technology, the biggest mining dump truck in the world is actually the Belaz 75710, which has a payload capacity of 496 tons and an empty weight of 360 tons. It’s also 67.5 feet long, 26.7 feet high, and 32 feet wide. Packing eight large-size Michelin tubeless pneumatic tires and two 16-cylinder turbocharged diesel engines, each capable of putting out 2,300 horsepower, the Belaz 75710 also boasts a top speed of around 40 MPH.
The Liebherr T 284, on the other hand, is the second biggest mining truck in the world, a distinction it shares with the Caterpillar 797F and Terex MT 6300AC. With a gross weight of 661 tons, the T 284 is 51 feet long, 24 feet high, 31.7 feet wide. Equipped with a 20-cylinder diesel engine that puts out a gross power output of nearly 4,000 horsepower, the T 284 does pack more power than the Belaz 75710.
We’d be lying if we said it wouldn’t be cool to see a Liebherr T 284 vs. Belaz 75710 tug of war battle. But, something tells us that the sorts of guys operating these trucks don’t have enough free time for mining truck tug of wars.
