The Rear-Facing Child Seat on a Tesla Model S Caused a Huge Misunderstanding With Local Law Enforcement

"Whoops, our bad!" That's basically what a couple of police officers were ultimately forced to say after they waited outside of a man's home and asked him to open his trunk.

As it turns out, a witness in a parking lot had reported that the man had put a child in the trunk of his car. When the man arrived home, the officers greeted him and asked him to open the trunk. They found a child inside, but she was sitting in one of those rear-facing child seats that you can get for the Tesla Model S. Needless to say, everyone eventually had a good laugh about the whole thing, thankful it was all just a big misunderstanding and not a legitimate kidnapping.

The above incident, which happened back in October 2015, wasn't the first time that police officers have been confused by Tesla's rear-facing child seats. In February 2017, a similar, but this time not-so-funny, misunderstanding went down in Santa Clarita, California, when police held a driver at gunpoint after they were spotted loading a child into the Tesla's backseat.

Shortly following the incident, Lt. Rob Hahnlein of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Department explained, "The new Teslas have a weird back seat and when they put the (child) in the back seat it looked like they were putting them in the trunk."

"We're going to investigate (a kidnapping) and detain whoever until we figure out that it is not a crime. We're not Tesla experts."

Hey, it's okay. You don't need to be a Tesla expert. But, maybe you could've done without the whole gunpoint thing.
