With all that Kyle Busch has accomplished in his NASCAR career, it might come as a surprise that he's never led 2,000 or more laps in any Cup Series season.
His previous career-high was 1,639 laps led in 2008, but with 1,973 laps already led this year, Busch has the chance to rewrite the NASCAR history books this Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway. To date, only 12 different drivers have paced the field for at least 2,000 laps in a single season. This prestigious lists includes NASCAR icons Dale Earnhardt Sr., Richard Petty, Carl Yarbrough, Darrell Waltrip, Bobby Allison, David Pearson, Rusty Wallace, Dale Jarrett, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick, and Martin Truex Jr.
Truex joined this list after leading 91 laps at Kansas just two weeks ago en route to his 7th victory of the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season.
If Busch leads another 27 laps this year, it would mark the first time since 1989 that two drivers both led at least 2,000 laps in the same season. The last two drivers to do so were Rusty Wallace and the late Dale Earnhardt Sr., according to ESPN.com.
Busch and Truex currently sit in the top-2 spots in the point standings and have combined for 12 wins this year. However, Busch is the only driver so far that's sealed his spot in the Championship 4 race at Homestead. That was thanks to his win at Martinsville this past weekend.
The Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway is schedule for this Sunday at 2 p.m. Fans can watch the race on NBCSN.
