Xfinity at Michigan: A tale of two manufacturers

The Xfinity Series returns to action after three weeks, kicking off the final six-race stretch before the playoffs begin. Next up is Michigan, a track where two of the three manufacturers have dominated in recent seasons.

Xfinity teams have competed at the two-mile track 31 times since 1992. Chevrolet leads the way with 17 wins, including the inaugural race with Todd Bodine behind the wheel of the winning car.

Toyota has only been in Xfinity since the start of the 2007 season, but its drivers have delivered success with six wins. Joey Logano won Toyota's first Xfinity race at Michigan in 2012.

Chevrolet and Toyota have split the last 11 Xfinity Series races at Michigan, which is the opposite of the Cup Series where Ford Performance has won the last nine races at the two-mile track.

Ford drivers have only won six of the Xfinity races at Michigan. The Blue Oval's most recent trip to victory lane was in 2011 when Carl Edwards led 62 laps. Dodge drivers have won two of the races at Michigan.

The majority of drivers to win Xfinity races in this stretch are current Cup Series competitors. Paul Menard and Regan Smith are exceptions.

Recent Michigan Xfinity winners include Kyle Busch (2015), Daniel Suarez (2016), Denny Hamlin (2017), Austin Dillon (2018), Tyler Reddick (2019), and Ty Gibbs (2022).

Two drivers with wins for these two manufacturers will be back in the lineup this weekend at Michigan International Speedway.

John Hunter Nemechek returns to Joe Gibbs Racing for another start after winning last season's race. This win was his second top-10 finish in four starts at the track.

AJ Allmendinger, who won the 2021 race at Michigan, will also be back in the lineup. The Dinger returned to full-time Xfinity competition this season and he continues to seek his first win of the season. He is 102 points above the playoff cutline heading to Michigan.

"We had good speed last year, so I'm looking forward to that," Allmendinger said ahead of a double-duty weekend with Kaulig Racing. "On the Xfinity side of it, winning in 2021 will always be a great memory.

"This year will be a little different with the aero package. It will be new with learning what we have to do to race the racetrack but it's a fun place."
