NASCAR penalizes Hendrick Motorsports after Pocono weekend

NASCAR has penalized Hendrick Motorsports after the trip to Pocono Raceway for a tripleheader weekend.

According to the weekly report, the penalties stem from a teardown inspection of the No. 17 Hendrick Xfinity Series entry. This entry violated the NASCAR Rule Book, specifically, Sections 14.3.3.2.1.1 K&L: Main Frame Rail Conical Receiver. This violation was an L1-level penalty.

The result is that the team received a $40,000 fine. It lost 40 owner points and 10 playoff owner points. Additionally, crew chief Adam Wall has received a three-race suspension. This includes Atlanta Motor Speedway, the streets of Chicago, and Sonoma Raceway. The No. 17 is only scheduled to compete at one of these tracks, as it is a part-time entry.

Wall will be eligible to return after Corey Day controls the No. 17 at the Northern California road course. The next race on the No. 17 Chevrolet's schedule is Aug. 2 at Iowa Speedway.

Chase Elliott controlled the No. 17 Chevrolet during the race weekend at Pocono. He won the pole for the first time since the 2014 season, and he led 38 laps. He was in the lead for the final restart, but contact from Justin Allgaier knocked him out of the lead. Elliott recovered and finished fourth while Connor Zilisch won.

The No. 17 team, which does not earn driver points, left Pocono sitting 14th in the standings with 405 points. It is now 16th with 365 points.

The trip to Pocono marked the 10th start for the No. 17 team this season. All four of Hendrick Motorsports' Cup Series drivers have controlled the entry. Elliott, William Byron, and Kyle Larson have all made two starts while Alex Bowman has made one. Day, a Hendrick developmental driver, has made three starts so far. He has seven more on his schedule.

These drivers have combined to post seven top-five finishes in 10 starts this season. Larson and Byron each won a race. Byron, Bowman, and Elliott have all scored a runner-up finish.
