Chase Elliott adds surprise start to NASCAR schedule

Chase Elliott is set to pull double duty this weekend at Pocono Raceway after adding a surprise start to his racing schedule.

According to Hendrick Motorsports, Elliott will compete in Saturday's Xfinity Series race at the Tricky Triangle (3:30 p.m. ET, CW). He will drive the No. 17 Chevrolet Camaro while trying to score his seventh career series win.

Back in February, Hendrick Motorsports unveiled a packed schedule for its No. 17 Chevrolet. William Byron and Kyle Larson each signed up for two starts while Alex Bowman and Elliott each signed up for one. Corey Day signed up for 10 starts in the Xfinity Series entry. This initial schedule did not feature any events in June.

Larson won the Xfinity race at Bristol Motor Speedway while driving the No. 17 Chevrolet. Byron won the Xfinity Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the Hendrick Motorsports entry.

Elliott's previous start in the No. 17 took place at Darlington Raceway in the spring. He finished second behind Joe Gibbs Racing's Brandon Jones. Now, he will head to Pocono Raceway for only the third time as an Xfinity Series driver after announcing this surprise start.

The 2014 series champion has not won at the 2.5-mile track known for fuel strategy, but he has delivered strong performances in his two starts. He crossed the line second behind Kyle Busch in 2018 while driving for GMS Racing. He then finished third behind Austin Hill and Sam Mayer in 2023 while driving the No. 17 for Hendrick Motorsports.

This consistency at Pocono Raceway has continued for Elliott in the Cup Series. His first start at the Tricky Triangle resulted in a fourth-place finish. He has gone on to finish top 10 in 10 of his 15 starts while winning one time.

Elliott was the surprise winner of the first Gen 7 race at Pocono Raceway. He originally crossed the finish line third behind Denny Hamlin and Busch, but NASCAR disqualified both drivers due to illegal tape on their Toyota Camrys.
