Lost wheel disrupts Chase Briscoe's Las Vegas race

Chase Briscoe faced early issues during Sunday afternoon's Cup Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He received a penalty after his No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Camry XSE lost a wheel.

The issue arose during the opening round of green flag pit stops. Briscoe made his stop during stage 1 and then headed back onto the track. However, he quickly brought out the caution as the left-rear wheel detached from the No. 19.

The replay showed that the No. 19 team immediately knew there was an issue with the pit stop. The moment Briscoe exited the pit box and headed back onto the track, the crew members began frantically waving their arms.

Briscoe's car lost the wheel on the racing surface, so NASCAR officials held him on pit road for two laps. This dropped him to 36th in the running order and four laps behind the leaders.

The lost wheel shook up the running order of the race. Some of the drivers had made their green flag pit stops before Briscoe's issue, so they took the wave around to get back on the lead lap. The other drivers in the field made their stops under caution and cycled to the front of the pack.

The issues will continue for Briscoe and the No. 19 team. NASCAR will suspend two crew members this week and will name them in the weekly penalty report. These two crew members will miss the next two races and will be eligible to return on April 6 at Darlington Raceway.

Briscoe is the latest driver to lose a wheel this season. Kyle Larson's No. 5 Chevrolet had an issue of its own during the Cup Series race at Circuit of the Americas. This led to him finishing 36th in the road course race. Larson's suspended crew members will be eligible to return to the lineup next weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
