Layne Riggs, Carson Hocevar deliver exhilarating Kansas finish

Kansas Speedway has a reputation for being one of NASCAR's best tracks. It lived up to this on Saturday night, especially during a final sequence featuring Carson Hocevar and Layne Riggs battling to the finish.

NOTE: NASCAR disqualified Layne Riggs after the No. 34 failed post-race inspection

The Front Row Motorsports driver had a huge run coming to the white flag, which he used to pull to the inside of Hocevar in Turn 1. The two trucks made contact, which sent them spinning toward the outside wall.

They didn't wreck. They tagged the wall but straightened back out. They kept racing hard as Hocevar remained in the lead. He scored his first win since 2023 and used the opportunity to show his displeasure with Riggs.

"Man, I really gave it my all," Riggs told Fox Sports' Josh Sims. "...Last lap, I got to him, got into him a little bit, we both hit the wall. He won the race, and I think he was mad at me.

"I think he flipped me off all the way down the frontstretch coming to the checkered, but how can you be mad when you win the race? It's all good. It's great racing the Cup guys, and I think it just proves that I'm going to be there one day."

The final 35 laps featured Hocevar leading the field in his No. 7 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet. The dominant driver, Corey Heim, was buried further back in the pack after a penalty for a restart violation, so it was Hocevar's race to lose.

The Spire driver had a lead of 1 second over teammate William Byron, but he didn't have the same pace as Riggs, who had moved into third place with 12 laps to go. The Front Row Motorsports driver then chased down Byron and took second place with seven to go.

It initially appeared that Riggs may not have time to erase a deficit of more than 1 second, but he did exactly that by racing inches away from the outside wall.

It did not matter that Riggs tagged the wall on one lap; he was still faster than Hocevar. Although he ultimately fell short of his first win of the season.

The finish was surprising and exhilarating, but one of the biggest moments of the race took place dozens of laps before.

Frankie Muniz spun after trying to avoid Connor Mosack with 37 laps remaining. This happened in the middle of green flag pit stops. Hocevar was on pit road, but the timing of the caution ensured that he could stay on the lead lap.

Hocevar cycled back to the lead while others had to take the wave around to get back on the lead lap. This includes Riggs, who lined up 16th for the final restart. This gave him precious little time to work his way through the field.

Riggs did exactly that, which set up the wild finish at the 1.5-mile track.
