Kyle Larson crashes in Indy 500 as The Double attempt ends

For the second year in a row, Kyle Larson's attempt to complete The Double has ended early. This time, it was due to a crash.

The Hendrick Motorsports driver crashed on Lap 92 of 200 of Sunday's Indianapolis 500, the first of two races required to complete The Double. The replay showed that his No. 17 Arrow McLaren entry wiggled after a downshift and then spun around in the short chute entering Turn 2.

As Larson spun, his car clipped Kyffin Simpson's car, which sent it spinning into the outside wall. Sting Ray Robb avoided the crash, but he lost control after clipping the outside wall and breaking the toe link. His car spun down across the track and slammed into the tire barrier.

"It was a bit crazy there on the start, and then I got tight behind Takuma (Sato)," Larson told Fox Sports. "I was really close to him, and I think -- I haven't really seen a replay -- I got loose and kind of got all over the place. Yeah. I just spun.

"Got too eager there on the restart and caused that crash. Hate it for everybody who also got caught up in it. Just bummed out. Try to get over this quickly and get on to Charlotte and forget about it."

Larson's day is not complete. He will still fly to Charlotte so that he can make it to the start of the Coca-Cola 600. He will start this crown jewel race from the front row as he tries to score his fourth win of the NASCAR Cup Series season.

Larson's quest to complete The Double ended much earlier this year than it did last season. He completed all 500 miles of the Indy 500 last season and finished 18th after a penalty.

He never had an opportunity to attempt the Coca-Cola 600 due to heavy rainfall in Indianapolis postponing the Indy 500. The same storm then hit Concord, North Carolina, and ended the Coca-Cola 600 as Larson arrived at the track.

Tony Stewart is still the only driver to complete all 1,100 miles of The Double. He finished sixth in the 2001 Indy 500 while driving for Chip Ganassi, and then he finished third in the Coca-Cola 600 while driving for Joe Gibbs.
