In case you missed it, huge swaths of Portugal are engulfed in flames. The fires raged so intensely that at least 100 people lost their lives, triggering President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to enter the nation into three days of mourning in 2017.

The driver of this Audi nearly became another fatality in the disaster, when he unwittingly entered the area around the fire. According to the description of the video on YouTube, the driver said,

"I entered the road on a point that was not closed to traffic. Moments later, I started to record the fire until I found myself almost trapped."

As smoke begins to block visibility, you can appreciate how perilous this situation is. People often underestimate how fast wildfires are, and the worst place to be is in one's path. The one in Portugal has become especially dangerous due to the winds from Hurricane Ophelia.

The fire has shaken the base of Portugal's government, causing the resignation of Prime Minister Constança Urbano de Sousa. It's pretty intense.
