Josh and Cierra Barton bought a white 2017 Honda HR-V earlier this summer, but the couple's car was stolen shortly after from outside their apartment near San Francisco.
Their car was missing for four months when they finally heard from the police. The car was found, and the couple assumed the worst according to SFGate.com.
"What condition will it be in? Burned out? Gutted? I was imagining the worst when we went to pick it up," Cierra Barton said.
The answer? None of the above. The car did have some dents, but the main concern was that there were 11,000 additional miles on the odometer. The reason? Well, the handful of Lyft stickers on the front and rear windows provided some clues.
The car was found abandoned on the side of the road, and apparently whoever had stolen the car had used it to earn money as a Lyft driver for several months.
Lyft provided a statement to SFGate, but they didn't have any answers as to who stole the car and used it for Lyft.
"The safety of the Lyft community is our top priority and we take these allegations seriously. Given the information provided, we are unable to match this vehicle to any Lyft accounts in the area. We have reached out to Ms. Barton and we stand ready to assist law enforcement in any investigation."
"Not only did someone steal our car, they made money off it," Cierra Barton said.
Hopefully the police can figure out who stole the car based on finger prints or something left behind in the vehicle. It's certainly not the ideal situation for a couple who just purchased a brand new vehicle.
