This routine traffic stop nearly turned tragic when a driver suspected of DUI hit an officer and the car he had pulled over. In Texas, as is the case in every state, drivers can get tickets for not moving over or slowing down when an emergency vehicle is stopped on the side of the road. Obviously, the driver of the white Acura could not be bothered to follow any such law.
In an interview with the local NBC affiliate, Officer Matthew Lesell described the incident, saying,"It felt like I was spinning through a washing machine."
Within seconds of being hit, Lesell is on his feet and eventually stumbles off the road. Somehow, the extent of his injuries were a fractured vertebra and subluxed foot. He was truly lucky and is expected to make a full recovery.
If you are wondering just how people managing to hit police on the sides of the road with such frightening regularity, look up the phrase "Target Fixation."
