New Hampshire Speedway is called the Magic Mile. Sunday night made a believer out of Kyle Busch.
"That was pretty intense," Busch tells NBCSN. "That was some 'Days of Thunder' stuff over there. You couldn't see anything."
He's referring to the massive wreck that happened near the end of stage 2 in lap 148 of the NASCAR ISM Connect 300. Austin Dillon hit Kevin Harvick, spinning his car and causing a huge smoke cloud to cover the track.
"I couldn't really tell where I was with all the smoke and everything that was happening, but just got hit from behind and spun out," Harvick said.
Drivers slowed, but didn't know where to go to avoid getting caught up. They started running and backing into each other. Points leader Martin Truex, Jr. had been leading for 112 laps, but then damaged the rear of his car trying to spin away from the wreck. It cost him.
"We had damage and had to fight from the back of the pack the rest of the day," Truex, Jr. said.
He was able to regroup and ended his night finishing 5th. Harvick and Kurt Busch weren't so lucky. They were done. For the elder Busch, the DNF means he'll most likely need to win at Dover next week to stay alive.
"It's all-in. We'll go there with everything we've got like we have been," he said.
As for the younger Busch, Kyle went high and found an opening between the wall and Harvick's car. Once he snaked through, it was his race. He dominated the rest of the way to take 1st. Kyle Larson came in 2nd, Matt Kenseth took 3rd.
