Jason Burdett no longer with Legacy Motor Club

Legacy Motor Club has made personnel changes midway through the NASCAR Cup Series season, which includes a crew chief change.

A Legacy Motor Club spokesperson confirmed to AltDriver on Friday that crew chief Jason Burdett is no longer with the organization. This is one of multiple personnel changes made amid the Olympic break. The spokesperson said that a crew chief for the part-time No. 84 team will be named at a later date.

The personnel changes do not impact the remaining races on Jimmie Johnson's schedule. The seven-time Cup champion will still plan to compete at Kansas Speedway on Sept. 29, Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Oct. 20, and Phoenix Raceway on Nov. 10.

Johnson will pull double duty at Phoenix Raceway as he also joins the NBC Sports broadcast crew for the race.

Burdett and Johnson worked together for six races this season. The No. 84 team posted an average finish of 30.8 with two DNFs. Johnson's best finishes in the Toyota Camry were 28th in the Daytona 500 and Dover Motor Speedway.

The seven-time champion was delivering his best performance in the Next Gen car before a crash at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He started 33rd but raced his way to 11th in the crown jewel race. However, he was collected in a multi-car crash started by Carson Hocevar.

Before joining Legacy Motor Club, Burdett was a crew chief at JR Motorsports. He spent 293 Xfinity Series races atop the pit box while working with three different drivers.

Burdett's first season as a crew chief was in 2015. He guided Regan Smith to two wins, 11 top-five finishes, and 26 top-10s in 33 races. The duo ended the season fourth in the championship standings.

Burdett was the crew chief for Justin Allgaier from 2016-22. The No. 7 team celebrated 16 race wins in this stretch and it never finished worse than seventh in the championship standings. Allgaier made the Championship 4 five times in seven seasons and he finished a career-best second in the standings in 2020.

Jim Pohlman took over the No. 7 team in 2023 while Burdett moved over to the No. 9 team. He partnered with Brandon Jones, who moved from Joe Gibbs Racing to JR Motorsports. This season did not play out as the team hoped as Jones only posted three top-five finishes and 10 top-10s. The No. 9 team missed the playoffs.
