Cup Pocono starting lineup: Ty Gibbs wins pole

Ty Gibbs will lead the Cup Series field to the green flag Sunday afternoon at Pocono Raceway.

Gibbs won the pole with a lap of 170.039 mph. This is his second career pole win and his second of the season.

"It's really satisfying, for sure," Gibbs said about winning the pole to NBC Sports' Kim Coon. "We were really close last weekend (at Chicago), and we were second. I just got beat at the last moment."

William Byron qualified second with a lap of 169.661 mph. Martin Truex Jr. (169.221 mph), Denny Hamlin (169.049 mph), and Josh Berry (169.135 mph) rounded out the top five.

Alex Bowman (168.723 mph), Tyler Reddick (168.083 mph), Ryan Blaney (168.678 mph), Zane Smith (167.926 mph), and Joey Logano (168.092 mph) all secured starting positions inside the top 10.

Saturday marked the first time that Smith reached the second round of qualifying in the Cup Series. His previous career-best starting position was 14th in the season-opening Daytona 500.

Bubba Wallace nearly experienced a disaster during qualifying. The No. 23 Toyota bottomed out in the Tunnel Turn on his warmup lap, which sent it shooting toward the wall.

Wallace was able to avoid crashing, but he lost his speed. He ultimately qualified 29th with a lap of 166.830 mph.

The green flag for Sunday's Cup Series race at Pocono will wave at 2:35 p.m. ET. The command to fire the engines will be at 2:24 p.m. ET. USA Network will provide coverage for the race.

Gibbs winning the pole at Pocono Raceway is fitting. This is the track where he made his Cup Series debut back in 2022 while replacing Kurt Busch.

He took over the No. 45 Toyota for 23XI Racing and started from the rear of the field due to a driver change. Gibbs avoided incidents on the track and crossed the finish line 16th overall. He then finished fifth in last season's Cup race at Pocono while driving full-time for Joe Gibbs Racing.
