In the last five years, Tesla has made a significant impact on the auto industry by releasing the all-electric Model S luxury sedan, Model X SUV, and most recently its more affordable Model 3 sedan, but did anybody expect that Tesla's next move would be the introduction of an electric semi truck?

Well, that's exactly what Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced to the world via Twitter.

Describing the vehicle as a "beast" and "unreal," Tesla's CEO said the company's semi would be showcased on October 26th in Hawthorne, California. This city makes sense when you consider it's the location for Musk's SpaceX company headquarters.

Last month, Reuters reported that Tesla's semi truck could be capable of an all-electric driving range between 200 and 300 miles. While this figure is lower than what most diesel-powered semi trucks currently offer, the cost of electricity is significantly lower than diesel fuel, so this could lower operating costs overall, as well as reduce emissions.

Reuters also reported that Tesla's semi truck could provide some autonomous driving capabilities, such as the ability to automatically follow each other, but Tesla has not confirmed those reports.

It seems like we'll have to wait until Tesla officially reveals its semi truck to find out whether it will feature self-driving technology. That's unless the reveal date gets pushed back again, which wouldn't be a surprise considering the numerous delays in Model 3 production.
