Xfinity at Daytona results: Ryan Truex wins

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Ryan Truex has won his first superspeedway race in a national NASCAR series after capturing Friday night's Xfinity Series race at Daytona International Speedway.

The race ended under caution after AJ Allmendinger, who had led 35 laps, crashed into the outside wall. Truex had taken the white flag before the caution, so he secured the win.

Chandler Smith was scored second. Parker Kligerman, Riley Herbst, and Ryan Sieg were all inside the top five. Justin Allgaier, who swept the first two stages, crossed the line seventh.

MORE: Truex wins, full Daytona results

Truex has only made eight starts this season while driving part-time for Joe Gibbs Racing. He has won two races -- one at Dover and one at Daytona. He has top-10 finishes in half of his starts.

The turning point: A crash with six laps remaining collected several cars and sent the race to overtime. The list of drivers involved included Jeremy Clements, Jeffrey Earnhardt, Caesar Bacarella, Shane van Gisbergen, and Josh Bilicki.

The incident brought out the red flag as track crews worked on cleaning up Turn 4. The drivers waited in their cars for 12 minutes and 11 seconds while preparing for overtime and potentially more chaos.

The drivers were able to complete the race after only one overtime attempt. However, the final lap resulted in multiple cars crashing before crossing the start-finish line.

Stage 1: Justin Allgaier won the opening stage. His 12th stage win of the season. Chandler Smith, AJ Allmendinger, Sheldon Creed, Parker Kligerman, Ryan Truex, Anthony Alfredo, Joe Graf Jr., Sammy Smith, and Jeremy Clements rounded out the top 10

Stage 2: Allgaier won stage 2 after Sam Mayer and Anthony Alfredo brought out the caution. Riley Herbst, Ryan Truex, AJ Allmendinger, Jeb Burton, Parker Kligerman, Sheldon Creed, Chandler Smith, Brandon Jones, and Josh Williams were all top 10.

Notable: Austin Hill entered Daytona with three Xfinity wins in six starts -- all in February races. He has struggled to contend during the summer races. Friday night's race continued this trend as Hill was involved in a crash on the opening lap of the race.

Hill cleared the DVP clock but then spent extended time in the garage as Richard Childress Racing made repairs to the No. 21 Chevrolet. Hill remained more than 20 laps behind the leaders for the rest of the night before finishing 31st.

Next: The Xfinity Series season continues on Aug. 31 with an afternoon race at Darlington Raceway (3:30 pm ET on USA Network).
