Weekend schedule for NASCAR return to Richmond

|

The time has come for two of the national NASCAR series to return to action after the two-week Olympic break. They will do so at Richmond Raceway, the 0.75-mile track in Virginia.

The Craftsman Truck Series teams will close out Saturday's schedule while Cup Series teams will race on Sunday to cap off the first weekend back. Xfinity Series teams will remain idle until Aug. 17 at Michigan International Speedway.

Richmond Raceway forecast and weekend schedule

Saturday forecast: Overcast skies with possible rain showers throughout the day. A high of 86 degrees and a 32% chance of rain at the start of Cup practice. A high of 77 degrees and a 33% chance of rain at the start of the Truck Series race.

Sunday forecast: Sunny skies throughout the day. A high of 81 degrees and a 10% chance of rain at the start of the Cup Series race.

Saturday, Aug. 10, schedule (Eastern Time)

Sunday, Aug. 11, schedule (Eastern Time)

The last time: Sunday's race marks the second time this season that Cup teams have competed at Richmond Raceway. Martin Truex Jr. dominated the race by leading 228 laps, but it was Denny Hamlin who won the race with an aggressive restart in overtime. Truex had to settle for fourth while Joey Logano finished second and Kyle Larson finished third.

The Craftsman Truck Series teams have not competed at Richmond since last July. Ty Majeski dominated the race while leading 168 laps and sweeping the first two stages.

However, a decision to stay out on the track on old tires did not pay off as Carson Hocevar chased Majeski down and made the race-winning pass with four laps remaining. Zane Smith, Jake Garcia, and Matt Mills rounded out the top five.
