Team Penske fires senior leadership team after rules violations

Team Penske has announced the departures of three members of the senior leadership team: Team President Tim Cindric, IndyCar Managing Director Ron Ruzewski, and IndyCar General Manager Kyle Moyer.

The organization announced the news on Wednesday, two days after the NTT IndyCar Series issued penalties to the No. 2 and No. 12 teams due to modified attenuators. These penalties knocked Josef Newgarden and Will Power out of the top 12 in qualifying and relegated them to the 32nd and 33rd starting positions.

"Nothing is more important than the integrity of our sport and our race teams," team and series owner Roger Penske said in a statement.

"We have had organizational failures during the last two years, and we had to make necessary changes. I apologize to our fans, our partners, and our organization for letting them down."

Team Penske did not initially announce replacements for the now-former members of the leadership team.

The discussion surrounding these modifications to a single-source part reached another level after IndyCar originally pulled the No. 2 and No. 12 out of the pole position qualifying line.

Beat reporters on site at Indianapolis Motor Speedway visited the speedway's museum and obtained footage showing that Newgarden's Indy 500-winning car from last year had the same modification.

The penalties issued to the two Team Penske cars also included $100,000 fines and the disqualification of team strategists.

This is not the only example of a scandal involving the Team Penke cars. Another took place in 2024.

Newgarden, the winner of last season's St. Petersburg event, and podium finisher Scott McLaughlin were both disqualified due to a violation of the rules surrounding the push-to-pass system. Power lost 10 points.

An investigation revealed that the Team Penske cars had illegal software that made it possible to use the push-to-pass system at a point in the race when it was not allowed, notably on starts and restarts.

Cindric said in a statement last season that the team had not removed the software after a preseason hybrid testing session.
