Richmond Cup Series starting lineup: Denny Hamlin wins pole

|

RICHMOND, Va. -- Denny Hamlin will lead the starting lineup of drivers to the green flag for Sunday evening's Cup Series race (6 p.m. ET).

Hamlin won the pole with a lap of 118.162 mph. This is his 43rd career pole and his third of the season. Now he will start from the front while pursuing his sixth Cup Series win at his home track.

Martin Truex Jr. will start on the front row after posting a lap of 117.822 mph. Josh Berry (117.601 mph), Chase Elliott (118.105 mph), and Christopher Bell (117.570 mph) will all start inside the top five.

Austin Dillon (117.770 mph) qualified sixth. This is his third time this season starting inside the top 10 and the first time since the spring race at Talladega.

Chris Buescher (117.463 mph), Bubba Wallace (117.591 mph), Joey Logano (117.096 mph), and Tyler Reddick (117.488 mph) will all start inside the top 10.

These positions are key for Buescher and Wallace, in particular, considering that they both remain in the hunt for playoff spots. Buescher is 17 points above the cutline. Wallace is seven points below the cutline.

Ross Chastain, who sits only seven points above the playoff cutline, will start further back in the field. He qualified 22nd with a lap of 116.929 mph.

While the Cup teams were able to switch between the option and prime tires during the extended practice session, they did not have this ability during qualifying. NASCAR mandated that they had to all qualify on the prime tires.

Now that the starting lineup is set, the Cup Series teams will prepare to take on Richmond Raceway for the second time this season. Coverage for the race will begin at 5:30 p.m. ET with Countdown to Green. USA Network will broadcast the race at 6 p.m. ET.
