NASCAR has to postpone Michigan Cup race due to rain

NASCAR has been forced to postpone the Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway for the second consecutive season.

The remainder of the Cup Series race will take place Monday, Aug. 19, at 11 a.m. ET. USA Network will continue to provide television coverage while Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio will have radio coverage.

The Cup Series garage will open at 9 a.m. ET, the drivers will report to their cars at 10:40 a.m. ET, and the green flag will wave at 11:05 a.m. ET.

The reason for the delay is rainfall in the area surrounding the track. The start of the race did not take place at 2:30 p.m. ET due to rain. Teams had to wait until 4:55 p.m. ET before taking the green flag to start the race. They then completed the first stage of the race as the skies grew darker.

NASCAR prepared to start the second stage after a pit cycle but ultimately called it off. Rain began falling outside of Turns 3 and 4. It then hit pit road minutes later.

NASCAR displayed the red flag at 5:41 p.m. ET as drivers climbed from their cars. They decided to postpone the race at 6:10 p.m. ET. The rain had stopped falling at the track, but another cell was on the way.

Chase Elliott is currently scored as the leader of the race. Martin Truex Jr., Bubba Wallace, Alex Bowman, and Tyler Reddick make up the rest of the top five.

Ryan Blaney won the opening stage of the race, but he gave up the lead when he headed down pit road for tires and fuel. Elliott, Truex, Wallace, Bowman, and Reddick stayed out after making pit stops on Lap 41.

The opening stage of the race only featured one natural caution. Denny Hamlin spun while trying to pass Wallace for the lead. He bounced through the infield grass but avoided major damage. He also kept the No. 11 out of the wall and away from other cars.
