NASCAR has issued penalties to multiple Xfinity Series drivers for their actions at Martinsville Speedway, both during the race and after.
According to the penalty report, Jeb Burton, Tayor Gray, and Sammy Smith all received penalties. Burton and Gray received monetary fines in the amount of $5,000. Smith received a monetary fine in the amount of $25,000, and he lost 50 driver points.
NASCAR said that Smith violated Sections 4.4 B&D: NASCAR Member Code of Conduct of the Rule Book. He intentionally wrecked Gray on the final lap of Saturday's Xfinity Series race.
Gray violated Sections 4.4 D: NASCAR Member Code of Conduct Notes: Infield Care Center conduct. He confronted Smith after Saturday night's race. Burton violated the same section. He confronted Daniel Dye.
"Taylor and Jeb were in the care center post-race, and there was some behavior that (NASCAR officials) felt stepped over the line as far as interrupting a medical situation," NASCAR Managing Director of Racing Communications Mike Forde said in this week's episode of the "Hauler Talk" podcast.
"The care center is almost an on-site hospital, so the drivers and any competitor that enters that area, there should be a sense of decorum there."
Said Eric Peterson, Xfinity Series Managing Director, "Unfortunately, what Sammy did was over the line and something that we feel like we had to react to. We would prefer to leave it in the driver's hands, but in this case, it wasn't really a racing move, and we reacted to it as such."
Burton issued a statement on Tuesday evening and said that he accepts NASCAR's penalty. Gray and Smith had not responded in the immediate aftermath of the penalty.
"I was frustrated the entire night with the quality of racing and an incident on the final lap pushed me over the edge," Burton said. "I apologize for going to the care center to air my grievance with another driver.
"I greatly appreciate the men and women that look after us each week. I'll always stick up for myself and the (No.) 27 team guys."
The penalty report also included penalties for two members of the No. 88 Trackhouse Racing Cup Series team. Aslan Pugh and Jonpatrik Kealey both received two-race suspensions after Shane van Gisbergen's car lost a wheel in last weekend's Cup Series race.
Finally, two teams received monetary fines for loose lug nuts. The No. 71 team of Spire Motorsports received a $2,500 fine. The No. 00 team of Haas Factory Team received a $5,000 fine.
