Michigan Cup starting lineup: Denny Hamlin starts on the pole

Heavy rainfall at Michigan International Speedway forced NASCAR to cancel Cup Series practice and qualifying. The result is that Denny Hamlin will start Sunday afternoon's race (2:30 p.m. ET on USA) from the pole.

Sunday will mark the fourth time this season that Hamlin starts from the front of the pack. He also won the pole at Phoenix, Nashville, and Richmond.

Tyler Reddick will line up on the front row next to Hamlin after finishing third at Richmond last weekend. Christopher Bell and Kyle Larson will make up the second row.

Bubba Wallace, Chase Elliott, Ross Chastain, Ryan Blaney, William Byron, and Austin Dillon will all start Sunday afternoon's race inside the top 10. AJ Allmendinger and Cody Ware, who run part-time schedules, will make up the last row.

Questions remain about which drivers will be the fastest on Sunday at Michigan. The reason is that Cup practice was very short. The initial plan was to hold a single, 40-minute session. It did not come to fruition as no drivers completed more than 18 laps during a session featuring multiple red flags.

Chastain had the fastest lap during the abbreviated session at 37.441 seconds and 192.303 mph. Martin Truex Jr. was second-fastest at 37.464 seconds and 192.184 mph. Truex also led the field in a 10-lap average speed at 191.008 mph.

Chris Buescher, defending winner of the Michigan race, was the ninth-fastest driver in single-lap speed. His best lap was 37.604 seconds at 191.469 mph. Buescher will have to start 18th after being unable to qualify.

"It's been a year. It's been a year for weather," Buescher said on Saturday. "We're obviously not putting a roof over this place.

"We are at the mercy of Mother Nature. Last year, -- we joked about it this week knowing what it's looking like -- Monday wasn't so bad last year. I don't want to be here Monday for us, for our fans."

The plan, weather permitting, is for USA Network to begin coverage with "Countdown to Green" at 2 p.m. ET. Race coverage will begin at 2:30 p.m. ET, also on USA Network.
