Michigan Cup race results: Tyler Reddick wins

|

Tyler Reddick has returned to victory lane after winning his first Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway.

William Byron crossed the line second. Ty Gibbs, Kyle Busch, and Brad Keselowski rounded out the top five. This win marked the first time since Matt Kenseth in 2015 that a Toyota driver has won at Michigan.

Reddick was well in control of the race with fewer than 10 laps remaining. Byron was two seconds back and out of contention for the win. However, Martin Truex Jr. hit the wall with six to go. NASCAR immediately threw the caution and erased this lead.

This incident set up a late-race restart as the majority of drivers stayed out on track. It also marked the fifth time this season that Reddick was in the lead in the final stage of a race when the caution waved.

"Is this for real? What a f****** joke," Reddick said over the radio. "Brushed the wall and knocked some f****** paint on the racetrack. Unbelievable."

The first overtime attempt was short-lived. Alex Bowman hit the outside wall as the field stacked up and then Ross Chastain spun sideways toward the inside wall. He avoided contact but ended up stuck in the infield grass.

The second overtime attempt started with Byron as the control car, but Reddick was able to take back the lead on the restart. He led the final two laps and won his second race of the season.

Reddick has now finished sixth or better in the last seven races and eighth or better in 10 of the last 11.

Stage 1: Denny Hamlin spun from second place and brought out the caution. This set up a short sprint to the end of the stage and a split decision regarding pit stops. Bubba Wallace gave up the lead to make a pit stop while Ryan Blaney and Chris Buescher stayed out.

Blaney won the stage as a result of the strategy. Chase Elliott, William Byron, Wallace, Buescher, Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski, Martin Truex Jr., Alex Bowman, and Ross Chastain were all in the top 10.

Stage 2: A caution for three cars losing right-rear tires at the same time set up a five-lap shootout to end the stage. The drivers did not complete this short sprint as Kyle Larson spun on his own and kicked off a big crash. This collected Bubba Wallace, Chris Buescher, Todd Gilliland, Christopher Bell, Chase Briscoe, and Joey Logano.

The second stage ended under caution. Kyle Busch won the stage while leading. Ross Chastain, Ty Gibbs, William Byron, Austin Dillon, Brad Keselowski, Martin Truex Jr., Erik Jones, Ryan Blaney, and Cody Ware were all in the top 10.

"Yeah, I just messed up," Larson said after exiting the infield care center. "You try to get all you can on restarts. I was just trying to funnel myself up the racetrack.

"I didn't want to get stuck on the bottom three-wide. Just got myself in an awkward aero spot and lost it. It's unfortunate. I made a mistake and cost ourselves a lot of points today."

Notable: The red flag that forced NASCAR to postpone Sunday's race lasted 17 hours, 15 minutes, and 18 seconds.
