McLaren Racing has put the racing community on notice. The organization has announced that it will soon "be back" in WEC while pursuing a Triple Crown.
CEO Zak Brown announced the news Thursday morning with a post on social media. He confirmed that McLaren Racing will return to the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) starting in 2027.
The team will compete in the prestigious endurance series while continuing to chase championships in Formula 1 and the NTT IndyCar Series.
"We're back to the World Endurance Championship and competing for the 24 Hours of Le Mans overall win," Brown said. "In 2027, we will be entering the Hypercar class; we're very excited.
"30 years ago, we won on our debut at Le Mans in a car that wasn't even supposed to race, and that sealed for us being the only team in history to have ever won the Triple Crown -- the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indianapolis 500, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans."
With McLaren Racing returning to WEC, the Triple Crown is again possible. According to Brown, the goal is now to win all three prestigious events in one season. This would require capturing the Indianapolis 500 in May 2027, the Monaco Grand Prix in June 2027, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June 2027.
This is a very small amount of time to achieve another historic feat.
McLaren Racing is not the only group taking on WEC in future seasons. Two others have previously announced plans to compete in endurance racing while joining the packed field.
Genesis Magma Racing announced in April 2024 that it will field two cars in WEC starting in 2026. The team will then move into the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in 2027 with two additional cars. Genesis Magma Racing will field the Genesis GMR-001 hypercar.
Additionally, Ford Performance announced in January that it will take on the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2027 while competing in the Hypercar class. This move is part of the Blue Oval's continued global expansion, which includes a partnership in Supercars.
"We are entering a new era for performance and racing at Ford," said Bill Ford, Executive Chair of Ford Motor Company. "You can see it from what we're doing on-road and off-road. When we race, we race to win. And there is no track or race that means more to our history than Le Mans.
"It is where we took on Ferrari and won in the 1960s. It is where we returned 50 years later and shocked the world and beat Ferrari again. I am thrilled that we're going back to Le Mans and competing at the highest level of endurance racing. We are ready to once again challenge the world, and 'go like hell!'"
