Legacy Motor Club announces multiple executive changes

The leadership team at Legacy Motor Club is expanding with the addition of two new figures -- Jacob Canter and Bobby Kennedy.

According to a press release from the team, Kennedy will take over the newly created role of General Manager. He will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Cup Series team. He will report directly to Chief Executive Officer Cal Wells III.

Canter will serve as the Director of Competition and will oversee the competition department. This includes the crew chiefs and pit crews. Canter will also report directly to Wells.

"Bringing in people like Jacob and Bobby is what we need at this stage in the game," said co-owner Jimmie Johnson. "This has been a difficult season and performance hasn't been where we want it to be, so moves like this are necessary. We want to show up, be competitive, and win races. That's the main goal."

Canter has multiple decades of engineering experience on his resume. He spent time at Rusty Wallace Racing before joining Joe Gibbs Racing. He spent nearly 16 years at JGR while serving as a race engineer and then as the Research and Development Team Manager.

Canter most recently worked at General Motors as Engineering Manager of Vehicle Performance.

"I am incredibly excited to join Legacy Motor Club and embark on this new journey," Canter said in a statement. "I am thankful to Maury (Gallagher), Jimmie (Johnson), Richard (Petty), and Cal for this opportunity.

"It is a competitive advantage to be a part of a team with amazing vision and leadership. I look forward to collaborating with the talented team at Legacy Motor Club to drive our success on and off the track with a championship mindset."

The moves take place amid a season of trials for Legacy Motor Club, which is in its first season with Toyota Racing. The team does not have an alliance with Joe Gibbs Racing as 23XI Racing does. Instead, the team is more of an autonomous operation.

Legacy MC's first season with Toyota has featured Erik Jones and John Hunter Nemechek as the full-time drivers. Both have been in contention in some races but have also struggled with finishes.

Jones has one top-10 finish this season, which he posted in the Daytona 500. His average finish is 22.2.

Nemechek has three top-10 finishes. His first was also in the Daytona 500. He also posted top-10s at Bristol Motor Speedway and New Hampshire Motor Speedway. His average finish is 24.4.
