Former Cup Series champion Kurt Busch was arrested Monday night in Iredell County, North Carolina, according to the Iredell Free News.

The outlet reported that the former Cup driver and current 23XI Racing consultant was pulled over for speeding at 11:32 p.m. after an Iredell County Sheriff's deputy clocked him at 63 mph in a 45 mph zone. According to the report, Busch had "had red glassy eyes" and "a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath."

A North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper assisted with the stop and charged Busch with driving while impaired. According to the report, his blood-alcohol concentration registered 0.17%. This is more than twice the legal limit in North Carolina (0.08%).

The Iredell Free News report stated that Busch was released from the Iredell County Detention Center around 2:36 a.m. on Tuesday. He has a signed promise to appear in court on Sept. 19. An Iredell County magistrate revoked Busch's license for 30 days.

"I'm very disappointed in myself and I apologize to my family, my racing family, and to my fans," Busch said in a statement, per Fox Sports. "I will work with the authorities to rectify the situation and work with the county to make it a safer place in the future."

AltDriver reached out to 23XI Racing for comment on Wednesday evening about Busch's arrest. The team declined to provide comment about the situation.

Busch, a Las Vegas native, spent 23 years competing at NASCAR's highest level. He made 776 starts in the Cup Series and won 34 races. Busch won the 2004 championship. He also won four Truck Series races and five Xfinity Series races during his career.

Busch most recently competed for 23XI Racing during the 2022 season. He started the season in the No. 45 Toyota Camry XSE and won a race at Kansas Speedway. However, he sustained a concussion during a qualifying crash at Pocono Raceway.

Busch missed the rest of the 2022 campaign. He then announced his retirement from Cup Series competition in August 2023.
