These days, we could all use a good laugh. You might remember this funny moment back in 2013, during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Awards Banquet in Las Vegas, when comedian Jay Mohr decided to try and roast Danica Patrick. It was hilariously awkward, and a must-see moment of the awards show.
Now, Jay’s jokes making fun of Danica Patrick were all in good fun, but I don’t think this went exactly how he planned it in his head. Danica was an easy target for Jay, but I will admit his jokes were a little weak. He received some mixed reactions on his opening joke, and another one flopped pretty hard. Regardless, they still brought some laughter among the majority of the crowd.
Let’s break it down. After a quick introduction and applause for Danica, Jay makes his first comment: “Danica I hope you’re not too uncomfortable tonight. I know you’re not used to being this close to the front.”
While the joke’s enough to make you chuckle, it was kind of unoriginal. Since laughter wasn’t the main reaction, Jay had to follow it up with a compliment. Danica’s boyfriend Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (now ex-boyfriend) found himself in the hot seat as well, after Jay started making comments about their relationship, and tries to give him some “Advice, Just guy to guy,” which brought up another joke that wasn’t worth too much more than a short laugh.
What made this moment at the Sprint Cup banquet so great wasn’t the jokes themselves, but the intense, stone-faced death glare that Danica keeps on her face. Since Jay’s very first comment, you can plainly tell she’s not having any of it. Stenhouse also didn’t seem very impressed with the jokes, as he kept an unamused demeanor similar to Danica’s. What’s even better is that the director of the show grabs a close-up shot of the couple and puts it on the big screen, so Jay can clearly see their look of disapproval.
Alright, so the jokes weren’t the best, but I feel like Danica could have lightened up a bit. I mean, it was a roast after all. Not only that, but she throws her own jabs during her acceptance speech for the NASCAR award. She stated “I have amazing fans, I’m so fortunate, and I think it’s pretty safe to say Jay Mohr is not one of them.”
Honestly, that joke was more successful than most of Jay’s during the evening. He later comes back out on the stage and explains that his Twitter feed is blowing up with angry Danica Patrick fans. Following this, he apologizes once more and explains that the NASCAR drivers he named are the ones he admires the most, so it was all in good fun.
Whether you want to laugh at the awkwardness, the bitterness, or the jokes themselves, this moment is sure to make you smile in some form or fashion. It should also be a reminder not to take things too seriously. Life is short, and it’s good to laugh at yourself from time to time. I’m glad this played out the way it did, because if not, we wouldn’t have this hilarious moment to look back on.
