Injury results in Christopher Bell crew chief change

The No. 20 team of Joe Gibbs Racing will have a new crew chief for the next few weeks after an injury to Adam Stevens.

According to a statement from Joe Gibbs Racing, Stevens suffered a double knee injury while enjoying vacation time with his family. He underwent surgery to repair both knees. The procedures were a success, but Stevens will have to work remotely for the next few weeks.

Car chief Chris Sherwood will take over as the at-track crew chief for Christopher Bell and the No. 20 team. Stevens will continue to be involved as he works remotely from the Joe Gibbs Racing war room in Huntersville, North Carolina.

"I hate that I won't be at the track for a few weeks, but I will be fully engaged remotely," Stevens said in a statement from the team.

"I am very thankful for the depth and strength of this 20 team and don't anticipate my physical absence having any effect on our performance. The surgery went well, and I will be back at the track in a few weeks."

Stevens, who won two championships with Kyle Busch, has been atop the No. 20 pit box since the start of the 2021 season. He joined forces with Bell as the Oklahoma driver made the move to Joe Gibbs Racing from Leavine Family Racing.

Bell and Stevens have achieved success together. They won a race at the Daytona Road Course in 2021, Bell's first Cup Series victory. They won three more races in 2022 and reached the Championship 4 for the first time.

The duo only won two races last season but they reached the Championship 4 once again. Bell is the only Cup driver who has reached the Championship 4 in both seasons of the Next Gen era.

This season has featured even more success for Bell and Stevens. They have had some near-misses, but they have also won three more races while scoring 24 total playoff points.

The next race on the schedule, Stevens' first from the war room, is at Richmond Raceway. This is a track where Bell has made eight starts and posted top-10 finishes in six of them. His best finish is second in the 2022 summer race and his worst finish is 20th in last season's summer race.
