Hard crash sends Anthony Alfredo to garage in Mexico City

Anthony Alfredo has a surprising mechanical issue on Saturday morning in Mexico City. This sent him hard into the wall and forced Young's Motorsports to start a marathon day of work in the garage.

The incident occurred early in the lone practice session for NASCAR Xfinity Series drivers. Alfredo went to navigate Turn 4, but his No. 42 Chevrolet spun to the left and into the grassy runoff area.

The grass was very wet after inclement weather in Mexico City, so the No. 42 could not stop. It slid through the grass and spun before slamming into the barrier on the driver's side.

Alfredo made the mandatory trip to the infield care center for evaluation. He then told Fox Sports' Bob Pockrass what had happened to his car.

"We'll have to look into it because I had brakes," Alfredo told Pockrass outside of the media center. "I had just left pit road after putting slicks on -- I only made two laps on the wets (tires) and it was already dry. So we put slicks on, left pit road, was fine into (Turn 1).

"I went into (Turn) 4, and I checked my pedal -- I always do because unfortunately, I've had issues before -- and as soon as I actually laid into the pedal, it smacked the firewall, and I couldn't stop."

The hard crash meant that Alfredo could not take part in qualifying. His team had to immediately began cranking on the car to get it ready for the start of the Xfinity Series race (4:30 p.m. ET, CW).

Alfredo had initially said that he would have to go to the backup car. However, he later posted a photo of the team working on the primary car.

If they can get the No. 42 Chevrolet ready in time, Alfredo will have to start from the rear of the field for the second road course race of the season.

Alfredo was not the only driver who experienced issues in Turn 4. Christopher Bell and Dean Thompson both missed the turn and had to use the runoff area to get their Toyotas turned around. Harrison Burton also missed the turn in his Ford Mustang.

They all avoided hitting anything after keeping their cars out of the grass. They were able to continue with the practice session.
