Genesis Magma Racing unveils GMR-001 Hypercar for WEC

The New York International Auto Show takes place this week and allows manufacturers to showcase new products. Genesis Magma Racing used the opportunity to unveil its GMR-001 Hypercar, which it will use in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

The GMR-001 Hypercar was designed at Genesis Design Europe under the guidance of Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke. This race car, which celebrates the company's Korean heritage, utilizes the two-line lighting that wraps horizontally around the front and rear. This matches the lighting on the Genesis street cars.

The GMR-001 Hypercar has a flat underbody plate to support aerodynamic efficiency. The car also has integrated inlets, which "enhance thermal performance" by extracting hot air.

Maximizing the performance of all parts is key, considering that Genesis Magma Racing will push the car to its limit during these endurance events.

The livery will stand out on the track. Its base is the Magma orange previously unveiled for a line of concept cars. The design features the Korean lettering for Magma. The word "Genesis" will take up prominent space on both sides of the GMR-001 Hypercar.

The unveiling of the Hypercar and the livery is the latest step for the new racing team as it pushes toward the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2026, as well as the IMSA SportsCar Championship (IMSA) in 2027.

Genesis unveiled these plans in December 2024 while announcing that it would work "hand-in-hand" with Hyundai Motorsports while competing in endurance racing. A key part of this partnership is Hyundai Motorsports President Cyril Abiteboul, who serves as team principal.

The December announcement also included details about the driver roster. Three-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner André Lotterer and Luis "Pipo" Derani, a four-time victor at the 12 Hours of Sebring, will lead the race team's efforts while showcasing their endurance experience.

The duo won't control the GMR-001 Hypercar until 2026, but they have spent their time helping the team prepare for its first season. For example, they have conducted simulator sessions and taken on technical development duties.
