Erik Jones dons the headset for new Sonoma role

Erik Jones will continue his pursuit of a Cup Series win this weekend at Sonoma Raceway, but he will also take on a new role while donning a headset.

The Legacy Motor Club driver will head to the spotters' stand on Saturday, July 12. He confirmed that he will guide Will Rodgers, who will drive the No. 70 Chevrolet for Cope Family Racing during the Xfinity Series race.

This will be a swapping of roles considering that Rodgers is the full-time spotter for Jones and the No. 43 team during the Cup Series season. He puts on the headset each week and heads to the roof -- or spotters' stand -- to guide Jones as the veteran driver tries to win for the fourth time in his Cup Series career.

Why does Cope Family Racing need Jones to put on the headset and guide Rodgers in the Xfinity Series race? The simple answer is that Rodgers is also the spotter for the No. 70 team. He is the one who guides Thomas Annunziata and Leland Honeyman Jr. as they rotate starts for the first-year organization.

The race weekend in the Bay Area of California provides Rodgers with an opportunity to compete once again in a national NASCAR series race. He has 14 previous starts split between the Xfinity Series and Craftsman Truck Series, but he has not suited up for a race since the 2023 season.

Rodgers made his Xfinity debut in 2019 with Brandonbilt Motorsports. He joined the team at Iowa Speedway and then headed to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, where he finished 12th. Rodgers also joined the team at Homestead-Miami Speedway and the Charlotte Roval.

Rodgers returned to the Xfinity Series in 2021 with Sam Hunt Racing and in 2022 with RSS Racing. His best finish was 14th at Nashville Superspeedway in 2021, the first race at the 1.33-mile track since 2011.

The driver-turned-spotter's national series schedule also included five starts in the Craftsman Truck Series split between three teams. His best finish was 21st at Circuit of the Americas with Reaume Brothers Racing.
