NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. and veteran racing broadcaster Mike Bagley are teaming up to call a unique racing series. They will commentate on the "Red Bull Soapbox Race" on Discovery Channel.
The racing series, which premieres on April 29 at 9 p.m. ET, features amateur teams from around the world building gravity-powered soapbox cars. They compete and crash on "intricate, downhill courses."
Build it. Race it. Crash it. 🏁💨

According to the announcement and the promo video, these are not standard courses that reward the fastest soapbox cars. Instead, they feature jumps, hay bales, water hazards, and other obstacles that test and destroy the custom creations.
Each episode of the racing series will feature competitors in a different city. The list includes London, Des Moines, Dallas, Edmonton, Johannesburg, Madrid, and Sao Paolo.

Creativity is key for the competitors as they battle for a trophy and the "ultimate bragging rights." It is part of the judging process along with the actual speed of the soapbox cars. The more extravagant and unique the carts and costumes are, the better it is for the competitors.
"From beginning to end, this project has been high energy and fun to be a part of," Earnhardt said in a press release. "We hope everyone at home enjoys watching as much as much as we enjoyed hosting."
The "Red Bull Soapbox Race" is not a new creation for the 2025 season. In fact, this competition has traveled the world for decades since the first iteration in Brussels, Belgium, in 2000.
According to Red Bull North America, more than five million spectators have tuned in for these unique races over the decades. They have watched 160 events across 53 different countries and have seen some truly bizarre creations race down the purpose-built downhill courses.
This trend will continue in 2025 as the competition continues to cross the globe. The calendar includes three stops in North America. The first will be Des Moines, Iowa, on May 31. The second will be Salt Lake City, Utah, on June 14. The third will be Los Angeles, California, on July 19.
