Cup Series debut on tap for Richmond Raceway weekend

The entry list at Richmond Raceway will feature a 37th car as Parker Retzlaff prepares for his NASCAR Cup Series debut.

The Wisconsin native will join MBM Motorsports and he will drive the No. 66 Ford Mustang. This race will also mark MBM Motorsports' first Cup Series start at Richmond Raceway since the 2019 season when Joey Gase took over the No. 66.

This move to MBM Motorsports pushes up the date of Retzlaff's debut by multiple weeks.

The Wisconsin native was originally set to join Beard Motorsports for the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway. However, MBM Motorsports told journalist Toby Christie that NASCAR required Retzlaff to have a non-superspeedway start on his resume before heading to Daytona.

Retzlaff will still join Beard Motorsports for the Aug. 24 race at Daytona. He will drive the No. 62 Chevrolet Camaro while following in the footsteps of Noah Gragson, Austin Hill, Justin Allgaier, and Anthony Alfredo.

Retzlaff is currently in his second full-time Xfinity Series season. He drives the No. 31 Chevrolet Camaro for Jordan Anderson Racing, and he is in the midst of a season filled with some back luck.

Last season, he only failed to finish four races while contending for a spot in the playoffs. Retzlaff already has seven DNFs in 20 starts this season, three of which were due to unexpected mechanical issues.

The three-week break came at the perfect time for Retzlaff, who is essentially in a must-win situation to make the playoffs for the first time. He is 17th in the Xfinity standings and 193 points below the cutline.

Retzlaff will have the opportunity to reset on Aug. 17 when he returns to the No. 31 Chevrolet. First off, however, he will take on the Cup Series for the first time.

Retzlaff will not be the only guest driver suiting up for Sunday evening's race at Richmond. Full-time Truck Series driver Ty Dillon will make his sixth Cup start of the season and his fourth for Kaulig Racing. Dillon will pull double duty after competing in Saturday night's Truck race.

Full-time Xfinity Series driver Riley Herbst will make his return to the Cup Series and Rick Ware Racing. He will make his fourth Cup start of the season and his eighth overall.
