Another NASCAR driver could be looking for work.
Cole Whitt, who drives the No. 72 Chevrolet for TriStar Motorsports, told The Racing Experts he hasn’t had any discussions with anyone about a ride for next year.
“I haven’t talked with any teams or anything, and we haven’t had conversations here [at TriStar], really. We’ve been focused on trying to end the year strong.”
TriStar announced it would return to the Cup series for this season with Whitt in the driver’s sear. At the time, team owner Mark Smith said, “We are taking a different approach and expanding our competitive platform for 2017. It is an opportunity we feel is the best direction for this season and we are pleased to have Cole and his partners involved in those efforts.”
Whitt finished 12th in Indianapolis in August — and that was his best of the year. He has three total finishes inside top 20. His average start position this year is 32, and average finish, 28.
Still, he’s happy with the team, and that makes sense given TriStar isn’t close to being among the top Cup series teams.
“…I’m proud to be with the team, so if it works out, then that’d be great, but I understand if things change. Like I said, the family’s been amazing to me, so the Smith family alone has just been something I’ve been proud to represent in my racing career.”
We’ll see where he lands.
