Cup series championship contender penalized before Phoenix even starts

This is never the way you want to start the weekend.

ESPN did it's rundown on drivers who have been penalized for failing pre-race tech, and there are some important names on the list.

Chase Elliott -- who is going for a title -- received a 15-minute practice hold because his No. 24 failed pre-race tech twice. Joey Logano and Chris Buescher also received the same penalty.

Erik Jones received the stiffest penalty, losing 30 minutes of practice time for failing pre-qualifying tech three times.

Three other drivers failed pre-qualifying tech twice and will also be docked 15 minutes.
