Bristol primer: Historic sweep, bonus money at stake

A considerable amount is at stake for drivers across the three national NASCAR series as they return to Bristol Motor Speedway. Some will chase playoff spots, some will chase bonus money, and one will chase history.

Let's dive in.

Triple Truck Challenge

First up is the Craftsman Truck Series race on Friday (7:30 p.m. ET). This is the second event of the Triple Truck Challenge. The Truck Series regular who finishes the highest will lock up $50,000. A driver must be declared for Truck points to earn the bonus money.

Daniel Hemric won the first Triple Truck Challenge race, which took place at Martinsville Speedway. If he wins the bonus this week, the total will increase to $150,000.

Dash 4 Cash

The second race on the schedule features the Xfinity Series competitors. They will compete on Saturday evening while battling for spots in the playoffs. Four of these drivers, however, will have some bonus money on the line.

Justin Allgaier, Brennan Poole, Sheldon Creed, and Austin Hill will all compete in the third Dash 4 Cash race. Whichever driver who finishes highest among them will secure $100,000.

Allgaier and Hill have both won Dash 4 Cash races this season. Allgaier won at Homestead-Miami Speedway in March to capture the bonus money. Hill then won the Xfinity race at Martinsville Speedway to score the $100,000.

Two races remain in the Dash 4 Cash. Bristol is next, and then Rockingham caps off the schedule.

The weekend sweep

The bonus money will have a long-lasting impact on the winning teams in the Truck and Xfinity races, but the dominating storyline this weekend will be Kyle Larson's second attempt at a tripleheader sweep.

The California native will pull triple duty this weekend. He will compete in the Truck race for Spire Motorsports, the Xfinity race for Hendrick Motorsports, and the Cup race for Hendrick Motorsports. If he wins all three races, he will become only the second driver in NASCAR history to achieve this feat.

Kyle Busch has swept a tripleheader weekend two times. He won the Truck, Xfinity, and Cup races at Bristol in 2010 while making history. He then matched his own record by winning all three races at Bristol in 2017.

Larson nearly matched this record at Homestead-Miami Speedway in March. He won the Truck race on Friday night and the Cup race on Sunday afternoon.

He was in the lead for the final restart of the Xfinity race, but he did not have the opportunity to hold off the field due to Sam Mayer hitting him from behind and disrupting his launch. Allgaier won the Homestead Xfinity race while Larson settled for fourth place after leading 132 laps.
