Brickyard 400 start time, TV info, and forecast


Cup Series teams return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval on Sunday afternoon, marking the return of the prestigious Brickyard 400.

This race is the 28th on the 2.5-mile oval for the Cup Series. Jeff Gordon won the inaugural event in 1994, his first of five Brickyard 400 wins. Kevin Harvick won on the Indianapolis oval in both 2019 and 2020.

Sunday's race is one of five remaining events before the start of the playoffs. There are four spots in the 16-driver field open to new winners.

Start time: The command to fire the engines will take place at 2:19 p.m. ET. The green flag will wave at 2:31 p.m. ET.

TV coverage: Race coverage begins at 2:30 p.m. ET on NBC.

Sunday's Forecast: The WeatherUnderground forecast calls for cloudy skies, a high of 80 degrees, and a 1% chance of rain at the start of the Cup Series race.

Starting lineup: Tyler Reddick won the pole for Sunday's Cup Series race. He will lead the field to the green flag with Denny Hamlin on the front row next to him. Chase Elliott, William Byron, Kyle Larson, and Ty Gibbs will make up rows two and three.

Past winners: Three drivers with Brickyard 400 wins will be in the lineup for Sunday's race. Jimmie Johnson leads this group of active drivers with four wins. Kyle Busch is second with two wins on the Indianapolis oval. Brad Keselowski has one win at the prestigious track.

Michael McDowell, AJ Allmendinger, and Reddick have all kissed the bricks after winning on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.

Playoff picture: Ross Chastain enters Sunday's race in possession of the final playoff spot. He is 27 points above the playoff cutline. Chris Buescher is 44 points above the cutline while Gibbs is 67 points above. Martin Truex Jr., who has to serve a pass-through penalty at the start of the race, is 137 points above the cutline.

Bubba Wallace is the first driver below the cutline. He is 27 points behind Chastain. Chase Briscoe is 75 points below the cutline while Kyle Busch is 102 points below the cutline.
