Bill Egleston was in front of the pack, and his son was in the stand watching him race.

That's when tragedy struck

Earlier this month, Egleston, 53, an International Motor Contest Association Modified driver, died following a terrible accident at the Perris (CA) Motor Speedway.

His son, Michael, was in the stands. He described to ABC30-TV what happened:

"It seems like he tried to avoid a collision and perhaps, collided with a car, and went on a wall and landed on another car. Racing is fast, and you can't always see things, and this gentleman, he didn't see and he hit the driver side where my dad was," Michael Egleston said.

Bill Egleston died after the accident on the 1/2 mile clay oval track.

"We extend our condolences to Bill's family," said IMCA President Brett Root in a press release. "Bill was one of those drivers who made a positive impression on everyone. This is a sad set of circumstances."

Egleston, 53, was from Atwater and began racing with IMCA in 2007. His home track was Merced Speedway.

In addition to weekly events, the 13-time feature winner was a frequent competitor at IMCA specials such as the Duel In The Desert and the Pat Pettit Memorial.

But for his son and his family, they are grieving his loss.

"From that moment on and even until this second, it just feels weird, that's all. There's obviously this void," said Michael
