In a culture fueled by Foster's and crocodiles, it might seem counter intuitive to fine someone for doing a burnout. Seriously, Mad Max took place in the hellscape that is the outback. But that is exactly what happened to the Australian Supercars driver Chaz Mostert when he honored an age-old driving tradition and did a burnout outside Philip Island's first turn.
Mostert's enthusiasm is understandable. Philip Island was his first victory since an epic crash at Bathurst in 2015.
But it turns out that Aussie race moderators are as heartless as the country's sharks. Their eyes are dark, like a doll's eyes. Mostert was fined over $2,000 for the tire-killing endeavor, which is to say that it was undoubtedly worth it.
Australia may not support you, Mostert, but the rest of the world does. Burn on, you mad man from Oz.
