Forget horsepower and towing wars; the full-size truck market has intensified with its new pickup tailgate war. Following Ford’s tailgate step and GMC’s Multipro Tailgate, Ram Truck introduced its all-new multifunction tailgate at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show. This new tailgate made its debut on the 2019 Ram 1500 and will be available to consumers during the second quarter of this year.
The Ram 1500 multifunction tailgate is an innovation that stands out from its competitors with its unique dual-function capability. This tailgate is split 60:40 with dual-sided hinge tailgate doors that provide unobstructed access to the truck bed, with each door able to swing open up to 88 degrees and each able to do so independent of the other. Of course, the entire tailgate still folds down in a single piece like a conventional tailgate, and it doesn’t lose any functionality as it retains a strong 2,000-pound load rating.
Ram’s tailgate seems more practical than the integrated tailgate step that was first offered on the Ford F-150 and Super Duty pickup trucks about 10 years ago, yet not as complex as the Multipro Tailgate that debuted on the redesigned 2019 GMC Sierra 1500. This tailgate makes it easier to use a forklift to load cargo into the bed, and it should also make it easier to reach gear stored in the bed when a Mopar tonneau cover is installed. To make access even easier, there’s also a new retractable center step available for an extra $295!
The Ram 1500 multifunction tailgate will be available on all trim levels, including the luxurious Laramie and the off-road ready Rebel, for a reasonable price of $995. No word if this innovative tailgate will be available on Ram’s newly introduced heavy duty trucks or if the retractable center step will be offered with the spilt tailgate.
Ever since the new Ram 1500 was introduced for the 2019 model year, this truck has continually been an innovator in its segment, and the Ram 1500 multifunction tailgate should only make things better for Chrysler’s truck brand.
