If you're a fan of classic SUVs, then Land Rover's newest driving program is something you'll definitely want to know about.

Officially announced on September 15th, the Land Rover Experience Center Heritage Program gives folks the opportunity to take a variety of Land Rover models for an off-road adventure, including the iconic Defender SUV.

Fewer than 1,000 Defender models made it to the US market and this vehicle was only sold for a short time during the 1990s. However, demand is so high for this model that even used Defenders can sell for $70,000 to $100,000.

For comparison sake, the 2018 Corvette Stingray carries a starting MSRP of $55,495.

So, what exactly makes the Defender so appealing?

The answer may be its limited availability, unique appearance, and rugged off-road capabilities, which Land Rover enthusiasts can experience firsthand via the Land Rover Experience Center Heritage Program.

There are three cities where this program is currently offered. Those locations are Asheville, North Carolina; Manchester, Vermont; and Carmel, California. Once there, drivers will be challenged by a number of obstacles, including water crossings, rock crawls, and bumpy trails.

The only catch is a full-day experience runs $1,500, while a half-day adventure still sets you back $1,200.

Is the chance to drive a classic Range Rover Defender through a gnarly off-road course worth more than a grand?

It is if you listen to the brand's Vice President of Marketing Kim McCullough.

"Recognized as one of our most iconic vehicles, the Defender has conquered some of the world's most demanding terrain and we are thrilled to be bringing that experience to consumers through the Land Rover Experience Center Heritage Program," McCullough said in a statement. "Brand loyalists and new fans alike now have the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a piece of history and continue to celebrate this historic Land Rover icon."
