Freedom Racing Enterprises adds champion crew chief

Freedom Racing Enterprises will have a new crew chief guiding the No. 76 team, starting this weekend at Nashville Superspeedway.

The Craftsman Truck Series team announced Monday the addition of Mike Hillman Jr., a championship-winning crew chief who will immediately begin working with Spencer Boyd.

Hillman started the season as the crew chief for Bayley Currey at Niece Motorsports. Now he replaces Jeff Hammond, who served as the interim crew chief while also working as the team's general manager.

"Over the past nine races, I have served as the interim crew chief for the No. 76 Chevrolet Silverado while we searched for the ideal candidate for the permanent position," Hammond said in a statement. "I am thrilled to announce that Mike Hillman Jr. has been chosen as the new crew chief for Spencer Boyd in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.

"Mike brings an impressive resume and, more importantly, an immediate chemistry with the team that confirmed he was the perfect fit. We are excited to return to the track after a brief break in the schedule, confident in our ongoing progress as an organization."

Hillman brings a championship resume to the first-year organization. He has spent 18 seasons as a crew chief across the national NASCAR series, primarily in the Truck Series, and he has celebrated 23 wins.

Hillman achieved the most success with Todd Bodine between 2005-11. The duo won 19 races together and two championships. They never finished worse than sixth in the championship standings.

Hillman's list of successes also includes one win with Jeb Burton, one win with Raphael Lessard, and two wins with Kyle Busch.

This season marks the first for Freedom Racing Enterprises. Boyd and co-owner Chris Miller announced in January that they had formed the Truck Series team and that they would compete full-time.

Boyd and FRE started the season on a high note by finishing fifth at Daytona International Speedway. Boyd has since posted four more top-25 finishes and an average finish of 24.7. The team has completed every race on the schedule.
